Invitation to Church It was the last call for the day at a small wooden house in the poorer part of town. I was greeted first at the door by three large dogs that had the run of the house. I was wondering if they'd eat me, but the older lady who came to the door assured me they would only attack on command. Just as well, as I wouldn't have made much of a meal!

Anne invited me into the kitchen where she and her 40 year old son, Tony, were smoking and having a bottle or two of beer. We discussed different health problems they both had. Tony was a diabetic and Anne had cirrhosis of the liver. Anne said she had given up smoking and drinking at one stage, but since it was her only joy in life she'd decided life wasn't worth living without it.

I went through the canvass. We all had a bit of a laugh as it seemed totally irrelevant to both of them. I found the section on diabetes in Volume 4 for Tony to look through, and at the same time prayed to the Lord, asking Him what I should do. I said to Anne, “Out of these six books the one you really need is this one,” and I showed her Today, Tomorrow and You. She was having a look through it when a neighbour came to the door asking to borrow some cigarette papers. At that stage I had a chance to look at my watch and realised it was time to get my kids from school.

So when Anne sat down again I explained that I had to go and pick my kids up. “But,” I said, “just before I go, I'll show you this.” I had the Stampley Bible on my knee and I took it out of its velvet cover.

Anne's eyes lit up and she gasped, “Oh, it's beautiful!” She started looking through it, saying, “I've just got to have this; it's beautiful.” I asked if she was a Christian and she said she realty wasn't. Tony stated that he had tried a certain church once and had been very disappointed and was unable to get any answers to his questions.

I told him that he'd be welcome to come to my church any time. I said I felt sure he would find answers to his questions. “I couldn't go like this,” he said, indicating his singlet, stubbies and thongs.

I said, “God wants you just the way you are!” We discussed my returning to collect part payment for the Bible and then I asked if I could pray before I went. We bowed our heads and I asked God to help them find answers to their questions and to know how much He loved them.

When I finished I noticed Anne still had her head bowed so I shook Tony's hand and said how wonderful it was to meet such nice people. Anne was standing now and I realised she had been crying, so I gave her a big hug and told her how much God loves her. There were tears in my eyes too. We headed for the door and squeezed out between the dogs. Anne led me to the gate where there were some sweet peas flowering. I commented on how beautiful they were. Anne said she thought the fragrance came straight from heaven. I told her there were plenty more in heaven like that, just for her.

I must say that after this I was singing and praising God for the rest of the afternoon. - Brenda Browne, Northern Area

Then read was the Sabbath changed to Sunday and you will understand how and why the Sabbath was changed.
